Despite the fact that she’d already seen an Intruder, Amy shivered when she looked at the horrific creature. It’s a game, it’s a game, she kept chanting to herself as the Intruder approached.

What do we do?

Chris will zap it before it reaches us.

But Chris didn’t zap it. She remembered what Chris had told her: A player had five seconds to explode the Intruder before it obliterated the game. Had it been five seconds since the Intruder appeared on the scene? The chill Amy was feeling grew stronger, colder, as if the Intruder itself was radiating icy waves.

She was beginning to feel real tension. Was Chris not paying attention? Had he left the game running while he went to the bathroom or something? What were she and Andy supposed to do? How did you fight a virtual monster, anyway?

Andy decided to attack. Once the creature was in contact distance, he went into a kickboxing stance and swung one leg out at the Intruder’s skull—or whatever lurked behind the cloak. His foot floated right through it, and the skull remained intact. Andy froze. Literally. He wasn’t just unable to move because of fright. Amy could actually see icicles forming on his body.

So this was what Chris had meant when he said the Intruder could obliterate you. Andy was no more than an ice sculpture. Amy would be next.

Or maybe not. The Intruder was gone. She hadn’t seen it explode, but obviously Chris had returned from wherever he had been and zapped it. Now could he release Andy from the ice?

Apparently not. Nothing was changing. Amy looked around to see if she could spot an antidote that would return Andy to his normal state. The bleak, dusty gray surroundings provided no such possibilities. Leaning against the castle door, Amy tried to summon up the strength to break it down. It wouldn’t budge, but in the process of pushing, she felt warmth on the other side of the door. If she could get Andy inside, maybe the icicles that imprisoned his body would melt.

But how to get him inside? There had to be a way. Amy looked around for a clue, but it was getting darker. She hadn’t been able to see much before the Intruder appeared, and now she could see even less. Except for the pinpoint of light from a tiny star above her.

No, not a star—the light came from an eye on the gargoyle. It was blinking on and off. Even though she didn’t know much about computer games, she knew the blinking meant something. Obviously, Chris needed to click on the eye, and all she could do was wait for him to figure it out.

The gargoyle continued to blink. C’mon, Chris, Amy muttered impatiently. Chris didn’t do anything. Maybe she could she click on the eye manually? She estimated the height of the gargoyle and knew that even a flying leap wouldn’t bring her close to the carving. She’d have to climb somehow.

The castle walls were smooth. There were no ridges or crevices she could use for a foothold.
